Ask the employer’s benefits administrator how the plan coordinates with Medicare. Employer size, active employment and the type of coverage matter.
Understand Original Medicare, a possible Supplement and Part D, as well as the alternative of Medicare Advantage.
Do not assume that COBRA or retiree coverage gives you the same Medicare enrollment rights as coverage from current employment. Medicare enrollment also affects HSA contribution eligibility. Discuss timing with your benefits administrator and tax adviser before making changes.
