Medicare does not
cover long-term care.

Plan for the help you may need with daily life—and understand the limits of your health coverage.

Two different kinds of care.

Ongoing daily assistance

Custodial long-term care

Help with activities such as bathing, dressing or eating can take place at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home. Medicare and Medigap do not pay for ongoing custodial long-term care.

Limited, qualifying coverage

Short-term skilled care

Medicare may cover eligible skilled nursing facility care for a limited period, subject to its requirements. Certain home health services may also qualify. This is not ongoing coverage simply because someone needs daily assistance.

What CLTC means for your conversation.

Stephen T. Sullivan, Certified in Long-Term Care

Steve’s CLTC designation reflects a focus on planning for long-term care: who might provide care, where you would prefer to receive it and how the costs could affect your family.

The conversation begins with those practical questions, then considers whether insurance belongs in your plan.

Ways to prepare for future care costs.

01

Traditional LTC insurance

A dedicated policy may help pay for eligible long-term care services. Review benefit triggers, covered settings, waiting periods, benefit limits and inflation protection. Premiums may increase.

02

Life insurance with LTC benefits

Some life insurance policies include long-term care benefits or linked benefits. Using care benefits can reduce the death benefit. Costs, guarantees and eligibility differ by policy.

03

Personal & family planning

Discuss resources, caregiving preferences and family responsibilities. Medicaid eligibility is a separate, means-tested matter; consult appropriate advisers for legal and eligibility planning.

Compare the policy details.

LTC insurance is subject to underwriting, availability, exclusions and policy terms. A policy may not cover every service or the full cost of care. The ability to qualify and the cost of coverage can depend on when you apply.
